New ‘Newsreels’ about Occupy Wall Street

Jem has made 4 new short films observing Occupy Wall Street in New York, with a 5th on the way.
The films are playing as shorts, one per week, before feature films at the IFC Center theater, 6th Ave. at West 3rd st.

LITTLE FLAGS in 9/11 Show at PS1, NYC WEIGHTS installed at Jewish Museum

The short film, LITTLE FLAGS, continues its exhibition in the remarkable September 11 show at MoMA PS1 curated by Peter Eleey. It runs to Jan. 9, 2012.

NYC WEIGHTS and MEASURES will be installed at the Jewish Museum from Nov.4, 2011 to March 25, 2012

I will do a Q & A with Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto (only) on Friday, March 4 after the 7 pm screening of INSTRUMENT. (This is the museum’s free night, so film tickets are also free from 4pm on; however, the museum will have long lines!)
INSTRUMENT screens again on March 5 at 4pm
History of New York is one of my very first films and very rarely shown. It’s a rather primitive, 23 minute, Super 8 film (shown on video). Click the above link for details.

The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. will present:

Films for Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Jem made background films for Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The band is currently on tour, with Karl Lemieux running the 4-projector 16mm projection of films and loops (made by Karl, Jem, and Efrim Menuck). Some of the films are old ones used in their tours from 2000-2003, but some are new. Go to

CHAIN at Museum of Modern Art, MAY 2010

MoMA will screen the feature film, CHAIN (2004, 99 min. w. Miho Nikaido and Mira Billotte) as part of the Creative Capital Film Series.

MAY 15 at 4pm (with filmmaker Q & A) and MAY 27 at 7pm (filmmaker present).

RETROSPECTIVES and MASTER CLASSES IN SPAIN

Jem will have a (nearly) complete retrospective at the Punto de Vista Documentary Festival in Pamplona, Spain, Feb. 5th – 13th. The retrospective consists of 7 programs and will be accompanied by the publication of a new, bilingual book on Cohen’s work, Signal Fires.

The retrospective will then travel to Galicia (CGAI) and Valencia (IVAC/LA FILMOTECA) – details to follow.

SEPT. 3 Jem Cohen Movie Nite at IFC with Guy Picciotto on board

September 3 will be the last of Jem’s current run of special programs at the IFC Theater. He will present a selection of shorts, excerpts, and excavations, with co-host and frequent collaborator, Guy Picciotto. More info to follow.
